Cleaning Tips and Tricks – Exteriors

Sinks

  1. Porcelain – Coloured sinks – never use bleach. pour white vinegar over stain, scrub with a scouring pad. White sinks – pour liquid bleach over stain, cover with layers of white paper towel, pour bleach over towels, let stand for a few hours, rinse and let dry.
  2. Stainless steel – Clean with white vinegar or rubbing alcohol, rub with rag soaked in club soda, then wipe dry or pour a little baby oil on sink, dry with paper towel and repeat

Cabinets

  1. Formica, imitation wood, plastic, painted, metal – rub with Murphy’s Oil Soap
  2. Wood, prepare solution of 1 litre boiling water, 2 tablespoons boiled linseed oil and 2 tablespoons turpentine. Using rubber gloves, dip a rag into the solution, wring out and wash surface, wipe dry.
  3. For spot smudges, rub Lava soap on a wet rag, scrub, rinse and wipe dry
  4. For sticky areas, rub on mineral-spirits paint thinner.

Counters

  1. Formica, wash with damp rag, wipe dry or squeeze a fresh lemon over stain, let soak for 30 minutes, sprinkle with baking soda, scrub with a terry-cloth towel, rinse and wipe dry. Glossy/shiny formica – wipe with rag dampened with lemon oil, wipe dry with clean rag.
  2. Butcher block/leather grain formica – pour club soda onto counter, wash, rinse with warm water, wipe dry
  3. Tile – pour liquid bleach on counter, scrub with a nylon brush, rinse and wipe dry
  4. Grout – use liquid bleach or white toothpaste on toothbrush or nylon scrub brush and scour

Butcher Block

  1. Clean with damp cloth or cloth dipped in vegetable oil, wipe dry or squeeze fresh lemon onto stain, soak for 20 minutes then wipe dry.

Chrome Trim

  1. Wipe stain with rag dampened with baby oil, wipe with a clean, dry rag.
