General Hints
- Food sticking – fill half-way with water, add 1/4 cup dishwasher detergent, baking soda, or Spic and Span, bring to boil, turn stove off, let stand for 1 hour then rub with
stainless steel pad. - Food stains – soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes, rinse in hot, soapy water. Aluminum, glass or porcelain – boil 1/4 cup white vinegar with 2 cups water, wash in hot soapy water.
- Scorched spots – rub with ammonia
Aluminum
- Pour in vinegar to cover stain, bring to boil, simmer for 5 minutes, turn stove off and let stand for 1 hour, then wash.
- or boil 2-3 tablespoons cream of tartar, lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda or vinegar to 1 litre of water for 5 to 10 minutes, and scrub lightly with a SOS pad.
Brass
- Pour worcestershire sauce onto stain, scrub with SOS pad, rinse and wipe dry.
- Rub with paste of lemon juice or vinegar and salt
Copper
- Polishing – Pour ketchup over copper, scrub with SOS pad or dip 1/2 lemon in salt, rub over copper and rinse
- Stains – Put toothpaste on SOS pad and scrub. Apply solution of 1 litre water and teaspoon ammonia. Boil in 1 litre water with 1/2 cup each of salt and vinegar
Enamelware
- Boil enough water to cover bottom, add 3 tablespoons baking soda, let stand for 1 hour then wash
Iron
- Boil salt and vinegar to loosen burned-on food, wash, coat with grease
Non-stick [teflon]
- Add 1/8 cup dishwashing soap to water to cover stain, bring to boil, simmer for 15 minutes, wash, rinse, and wipe dry2. -Stains – simmer for 5-10 minutes a mixture of 1 tablespoon liquid bleach, 1 tablespoon vinegar with 1 cup water, wash, rinse then dry. Alternative – boil 2 tablespoons of baking soda and one cup of water for 15 minutes, rinse, the dry coat with vegetable oil.
Stainless Steel
- Pour white vinegar on stain, scrub with SOS pad
- Burned-on food – rub with baking soda or past made of ammonia, water and mild, non-chlorinated scouring powder.
Pie, Cake and Bread Pans
- Run raw onion over stain then rinse.
- or rub raw potato dipped in cleanser over rust stain then rinse.
Glass, Pyrex, Corningware
- Soak in hot, soapy water with a little baking soda for 20 minutes then scrub with an SOS pad
- or spray badly stained area with over cleaner, let stand overnight in a sealed garbage bag, open bag outdoors,rinse cleaner off and wash.
